Brief information about the School of Design & Architecture at ADA University

The School of Design and Architecture (SDA) is outlined in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano in the framework of Italy-Azerbaijan University initiative and will offer bachelor's, master's and non-degree certificate programs in Design, Architecture and Urban planning. ADA University is intertwined with the country’s plans where economic and cultural growth is leading the way. The urban areas are growing, and the country landscape and profile are evolving. Together with the leading agricultural sector, other productive sectors aim to evolve beyond oil-offering production towards promising new non-oil areas.

The School of Design and Architecture will share the polytechnic approach to Design, Architecture, and Urban Planning. Graduates will gain foundational disciplinary knowledge and practical experience - thanks to fundamental courses and the learning-by-doing educational approach that pursues up-to-date development lines in project-based design studios. The School of Design and Architecture offers an international level of study suitable for entering the job market as a junior architect or designer.

• Candidates for Assistant Professor must have a Ph.D. in Design or Architecture in hand from an accredited institution or have an anticipated completion date of August 1, 2025 or sooner from an accredited institution;
• Candidates for Associate Professor must have a Ph.D. and evidence of quality scholarship;

Description of the Disciplinary Area:

The objective of this disciplinary core, which constitutes the backbone of the designer's training, is to provide the student, through paradigmatic design moments carried out above all using workshop-type teaching methods, with a method for dealing with different design themes concerning the conception and design of interior spaces.

It also aims to direct the knowledge acquired in the other disciplinary areas to design practice, conveying it to a synthesis applied to the direct experimentation of design. Knowledge derived from the humanities, from the historical-critical area, visual cultures, and from technology and economics, is finalized in the various phases of design, generating a transversal competence that is continuously fed.

Courses with different modules (see description below) are made up of two competencies-specific modules (i.e. Design Process and Design Project).

Applicants can apply to just one module within the course according to their competencies.

General Objectives of the Course:

Interior Design Studio I constitutes the first specific design experience that the student encounters during his or her studies and aims to set up the skills to frame the problematic context in terms of design opportunities, constraints, possibilities, selection, and prioritization; to analyze the space-inhabitant interaction; to study artifacts and systems of artifacts in their formal, structural, functional, typological, morphological, relational, ergonomic characteristics, etc. In the design synthesis phase, this knowledge is brought together in project development activities involving the ability to translate needs into requirements; and to define materials, component parts, technologies, and development methods according to the required performance. The objective of this studio is to provide the student with effective methodological tools to deal with different design issues on a medium complexity scale from the very first approach. The specific topic can change among domestic and public spaces such as minimum domestic spaces, houses, food and hospitality services, exhibition and museum solutions, and so on..).

This course is made up of two competencies-specific modules (i.e. Design Process and Design Project). Applicants can include their preference based on required competencies.

Basic knowledge required

Design Process module:

• Knowledge and understanding of the reasons for the form, the reference design contexts, and the client's requests;
• Knowledge and ability to teach students the character and nature of the space, in its relations with the user and with the objects that equip it; related to the design concept, understood as the founding thought that instructs the physical and formal choices and gives them justification;
• Knowledge and ability to teach students regulatory, ergonomic and economic aspects so that the final projects have a feasibility connotation;
• Ability to teach students acting within a set of given constraints to identify design paths;
• Ability to teach students developing aptitudes for negotiation, teambuilding, leadership, and conflict management.

Design Project module:

• Ability to develop a project of interior design from the preliminary phases to the definition of requirements for development (to be reported in the CV/portfolio)
• Experience in organizing and assessing students' project outcomes through examination and public display.
