Brief information about the School of Design & Architecture at ADA University

The School of Design and Architecture (SDA) is outlined in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano in the framework of Italy-Azerbaijan University initiative and will offer bachelor's, master's and non-degree certificate programs in Design, Architecture and Urban planning. ADA University is intertwined with the country’s plans where economic and cultural growth is leading the way. The urban areas are growing, and the country landscape and profile are evolving. Together with the leading agricultural sector, other productive sectors aim to evolve beyond oil-offering production towards promising new non-oil areas.

The School of Design and Architecture will share the polytechnic approach to Design, Architecture, and Urban Planning. Graduates will gain foundational disciplinary knowledge and practical experience - thanks to fundamental courses and the learning-by-doing educational approach that pursues up-to-date development lines in project-based design studios. The School of Design and Architecture offers an international level of study suitable for entering the job market as a junior architect or designer.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Details of the job position

Programme: Bachelor in Architecture/Bachelor in Interior Design

Year: 1st

Disciplinary Area: Representation and Topography/Visual cultures, representation and technical drawing

Courses (tbc): Basics of Representation and Survey / Free-Hand Sketching for Design / Design Tools for Interior Design

Semester: First / Second

Start date: February 2025 (teaching starts September 2025)/ October 2025 (teaching starts January 2026)

Description of the Disciplinary Areas:

Representation and Topography (Architecture programme)

In the three-year teaching experience, in the context of the knowledge and methodologies supporting the project, the student acquires a detailed critical awareness of the different aspects that influence the design choices both on the front of new construction interventions and on the front of interventions on the existing natural and anthropogenic environment.

In the field of representation, the student also acquires the ability to apply the principles and procedures underlying the analogue and digital representation of space to architectural and context configurations at various scales. Furthermore, the student acquires the ability to critically integrate methods and procedures, independently developing graphic and modelling descriptions concerning the analysis and project themes, without forgetting the importance of the representation in the knowledge of the existing built environment.

Within the training course, the Topography and Cartography sector contributes to the acquisition of skills regarding the ability to manage technical, scientific, demonstrative and measurement operations aimed at processing maps, allowing their reading and use.

Visual Cultures, Representation and Technical Drawing (Interior Design programme)

This core subject area develops students' theoretical knowledge of visual cultures and technical-practical skills of representation and communication, with fruitful reciprocal feeding. On the one hand, students have been introduced to the use of languages and the related tools and techniques necessary for the morphological, material, and functional representation of space (from manual drawing to digital representation, from photography to the production of study models and prototypes, from digital modeling of surfaces to parametric modeling, rendering and the related post-production of the generated images). Students learn the codes of representation at the different scales of drawing, digital image production and manipulation techniques, and production techniques for models and prototypes both manually and with digital fabrication.

1) Course in Basics of Representation and Survey (Architecture Programme)

The course Fundamentals of Representation focuses on the understanding of architectural representation themes, as well as on its historical development, including the relationships with other disciplines and languages of the architecture; therefore, it aims at providing the theoretical, methodological, and operational fundamentals of the matter, concerning the architectural, urban, and territorial space. The educational goals refer to the technical knowledge and the learning processes required for understanding and configuring the architectural space based on the fundamental projective forms and to investigate the relationships between space, image, metrics, and modelling; by operating on the links between geometrical structures and graphic strategies; by highlighting the role of the projective principles and procedures in generating analogue/analog (USA) and digital images and models.

Basic knowledge required to teach the course contents

- Proficiency in free-hand sketching and drawing techniques.

- Ability to transfer shapes from the world of ideas to the world of representation quickly and synthetically.

- Expertise in teaching basic conceptual, cultural, and operational tools for effective use of drawing in manipulating space and elaborating architectural forms.

- Capability to teach surveying by drawing, including understanding geometries and proportions of buildings and making preparatory sketches for surveying operations.

- Experience in guiding students through practical exercises and theoretical lectures to acquire skills and manual abilities necessary for free-hand drawing in its various forms.

2) Course in Free-Hand Sketching for Design (Architecture Programme)

The Free-Hand Sketching for Design course provides the necessary skills for free-hand sketching and drawing and their crucial role in the design process. The goal is to form an awareness of the relationship between mind, hand, and paper through the sketch and to understand how this relationship is the basis of the creative process through the development of the ability to transfer - in a short time and a synthetic form - shapes from world of ideas to the real world of representation. The course will develop through practical exercises, free-hand surveys in situ and theoretical insights to experience the profound link between the discipline of architectural design and free-hand sketching.

Basic knowledge required to teach the course contents:

- Understanding of the role of free-hand sketching in the design process.

- Understanding of how to tailor exercises to students' previous experience and manual dexterity.

- Capability to teach surveying by drawing, including understanding geometries and proportions of buildings and making preparatory sketches for surveying operations.

- Ability to teach sketching for design, including exercises to elaborate forms and communicate design ideas quickly and naturally.

- Skill in recognizing and applying different projections in free-hand drawing.

3) Course in Design Tools for Interior Design (Interior Design Programme)

The course introduces and develops in depth the use of visual languages and related tools and techniques aimed at the morphological, material, and functional representation of the interior design project, through the development and interpretation of perceptual mechanisms and color systems. The objective of this disciplinary training core is to integrate design communication skills with the ability to translate elements of analysis and design synthesis on a visual level. These experiences will be oriented towards the development of the ability to analyze interiors in their material-technological consistency, formal articulation, functionality, and fruition, tracing certain matrices of origin of the project together with anthropological-perceptual aspects referring to the inhabitant and the identity of spaces.

Basic knowledge required to teach the course contents:

- These requirements reflect the need for expertise in visual representation techniques, design communication, software proficiency, and the ability to facilitate students' autonomy and creative expression in representing interior design projects.

- Understanding of visual languages and related tools and techniques for representing interior design projects.

- Knowledge of design communication skills and the ability to translate analysis and design synthesis into visual representations.

- Proficiency in using software for image processing, layout, and simple three-dimensional modeling.

- Knowledge of illustration and image processing programs, such as the Adobe package.

- Ability to foster students' autonomy in choosing and using 2D and 3D digital representation tools for their project ideas.
