Brief information about the School of Design & Architecture at ADA University

The School of Design and Architecture (SDA) is outlined in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano in the framework of Italy-Azerbaijan University initiative and will offer bachelor's, master's and non-degree certificate programs in Design, Architecture and Urban planning. ADA University is intertwined with the country’s plans where economic and cultural growth is leading the way. The urban areas are growing, and the country landscape and profile are evolving. Together with the leading agricultural sector, other productive sectors aim to evolve beyond oil-offering production towards promising new non-oil areas.

The School of Design and Architecture will share the polytechnic approach to Design, Architecture, and Urban Planning. Graduates will gain foundational disciplinary knowledge and practical experience - thanks to fundamental courses and the learning-by-doing educational approach that pursues up-to-date development lines in project-based design studios. The School of Design and Architecture offers an international level of study suitable for entering the job market as a junior architect or designer.

• Candidates for Assistant Professor must have a Ph.D. in Design or Architecture in hand from an accredited institution or have an anticipated completion date of August 1, 2025 or sooner from an accredited institution;
• Candidates for Associate Professor must have a Ph.D. and evidence of quality scholarship.

Description of the Disciplinary Area:

This body of disciplines contributes to the understanding and interpretation of the social and cultural contexts to which designed spaces refer and of the systems of meaning expressed by environments as bearers of aesthetic-cultural values. It also contributes to the framing of interior spaces within the production systems of contemporary material culture. Interior spaces, starting with the interiors of dwellings, but also service, consumer, cultural, and urban in the broadest sense, are strongly anchored in individual and social behavior and thus strongly interconnected with the cultural dimension of society. Free from mere functionalism, they fulfill profound needs of human and social nature, entering into the innermost values and psychological sphere of people. This core discipline aims to provide students with methods and tools from anthropology and ethnographic research, sociology, aesthetics, environmental psychology, and visual perception.

Through these disciplines, the student is led to a socio-technical knowledge of the context in which he/she acts, to an understanding of the potential value of places, in their symbolic and representative values, as well as an awareness of the ergonomic and perceptive qualities that define the relationship between the products that furnish the space and the user.

General Objectives of the Course:

The User Studies course is designed to explore the core objective of design: the transformation of raw technologies into tangible and industrially realized solutions that ultimately enhance people's quality of life. Throughout the course, a central focus is consistently placed on the perspectives of the "users", who are the ultimate recipients of these designed solutions. The course recognises the critical importance of understanding, adopting, and effectively using these solutions from the users' point of view. As such, teaching in this domain holds immense value in the overall training cycle, as it imparts essential attitudes, methodologies, and instruments that facilitate understanding individuals' evident and unexpressed needs in their real-life interactions with artifacts.

Basic knowledge required to teach the course contents

• Knowledge and ability to teach students analyzing the unique context in which a design solution will be implemented, considering factors such as user behavior, environmental influences, and usability considerations through specific tools such as ethnography, observations, and analysis of the different ways of living.
• Knowledge and ability to teach students customizing and tailoring research approaches to align with the specific objectives of a given project request, ensuring that user needs, preferences and experiences are comprehensively addressed.
